Product Information - Softwood Plywood
- Softwood plywood is generally used for
construction and structural purposes.
- The knotty pine plywoods we stock are
bought from the hardwood plywood mills and have grading similar to
other species of hardwood plywood with the exception of the number
of knots which obviously does not affect the grade. The quality of
the knots is what is graded rather than the number of them.
-
Glue Types: Fir plywoods are made with different types of
glue--interior, exterior, marine grade or water resistant, etc.
Typically we stock interior grade plywood unless otherwise
specified.
- Grading: The
grading is different from hardwood plywood grading though it has
the similar A, B, C, D, and Shop designations. The main
differences are that softwood plywoods have more liberal
standards. An "A" face may allow quite a number of "football
plugs" in it whereas an "A" face in hardwood plywood is relatively
free from defects. B, C, and D grades allow progressively more
defects. Shop grade typically is an off-fall AC or AD panel. It
can have a number of defects that include being out of square,
delamination, variations in thicknesses within the same panel,
sand-throughs, etc. Also, softwood plywoods use face grades as
backs rather than having separate numbered back grades. An "X"
designation after the face and back designations refers to an
exterior glue being used within the panel as opposed to an
interior grade. For an example a CDX panel has a low grade face
and a lower grade back laid up with an exterior glue.
