Product Information - Hardboard
Hardboard is made of wood fibers like MDF, however the fibers are
not as fine. It is a cheaper process than MDF is. The wood that is
used is primarily recycled wood from pallets and other sources.
There is a standard and tempered hardboard that is available. The
tempered hardboard is similar to standard hardboard, however, oil
and water is mixed with the fibers instead of just water to make it
more rigid. Hardboard is also available in one-sided and two-sided
The advantages of hardboard are that it is an inexpensive and fairly
rigid product for its thickness, and yet it can be flexible enough
to bend where needed, especially in 1/8". The disadvantages of
hardboard is that it is not consistent in thickness because of the
continuous press it is made in--as opposed to the single opening
press a MDF is made in. It does not paint up as well as MDF does,
also. Hardboard is available in pegboard and with a painted surfaced
as well.
